With Szeth, the murderer who cries as he kills, we get an introduction to the magic system, so that we’re familiar with it when Kaladin shines. With Dalinar, we get the lore of Roshar, and with Shallon, we get worldbuilding.
Every character has his and her own arc, but Kaladin’s arc places him as one of my favorite characters thus far. I love that we see him as his best, only for him to come crashing down. His subsequent rise is filled with ups and downs, and through that, we see his code of honor, especially when he goes against his prejudice and helps Dalinar.
Although this book only gives us the backstory of Kaladin, I suspect that in the other three books, we’ll get a backstory of the other characters. Oathbringer, undoubtedly, HAS to be Dalinar’s.
Graphic: Slavery
Moderate: Emotional abuse, Suicidal thoughts, and Suicide
