A bit different from her usual novels. Better than Zero Days. Not as good as It Girl.

I loved the vivid imagery she portrayed that had me picturing every bit of the island vividly. My daughters live with Type 1 Diabetes and I was so pleasantly surprised that she did her research and got all of the diabetes related scenes correct! This book was definitely Lord of the Flies, but adult version. Very well written!

Most of the book was a laughably awful clash of Lord of the Rings and the TV show Lost. But the ending was good, and the remaining characters were well developed. The reveal at the end was completely unnecessary. She's done better in her other books.

Honestly disappointing! And nothing at all like And Then There Were None. All of the plot "twists" are easily guessed and you know exactly who the bad guy is from the beginning. I also have a particular pet peeve for when characters make really dumb decisions and/or overlooked very obvious solutions just to move the plot along (why tf don't they ever try to use the batteries from the cameras?). The "twist" at the end is not a twist at all. And thank character of Lyla has so many inconsistencies as to stretch belief. If you can ignore those things, it was a decently entertaining listen as far as plot and I did like the girl power aspect.

3.75 ⭐️ One Perfect Couple was a unique thriller, set on the premise of a reality TV dating show. Our MC, Lila, agrees to go on the show, solely on the basis of doing it to support her boyfriend who is an aspiring, yet thus far unsuccessful, TV star/actor. Once the group arrives on the beautiful exotic island where the show is being filmed, everything starts going wrong.

Although not an overly phenomenal thriller book, I do feel that the premise was unique and was enjoyable as a reality TV girlie. The most shocking twist in this book was a lack of a big twist at all, in my opinion. I spent the entire book trying to figure out who was “actually behind it”, only to end the book and find out that the twist was very small and not really all that important to the story as a whole.

I did find Lila to be quite grounded and down to earth, which can be rare in thriller books, as were often expected to follow the story of an unreliable narrator, which Lila was far from in my opinion. One of my favourite aspects of the book was Lila’s character development, from a shy character, to one who takes charge and is a leader on the island. I wish that Ruth Ware had delved a bit deeper in to Lila’s character development. Another aspect I really enjoyed was the friendship between the women on the show, and again, wish Ruth had highlighted that more, especially at the end of the book. Overall a good read, especially if you like reality TV. The audiobook was well done and overall enjoyable.

More plot-driven than Ware’s other books, also less creepy psychological elements and more of a general dread and anxiety.
