Wow, I'm positively surprised by this author!
After reading the novella set before this I was excited to jump into this series, and I was not disappointed!

Carter manages to write some intriguing characters who are definitely not boring to read about, who are also actually smart and not dumbed down to prevent them from "uncovering" major plot points. I really liked Hunter with his complicated backstory. A man who actually feels emotions and has humor? Yay!!

I love how the author introduced so many side characters, some of whom more unrelated to the plot than others, such kept me guessing as to who would turn out to be the killer, if any. I had my (correct) suspicions, but I also had some theories which couldn't be further  from the truth, so I've got to applaud Carter's storytelling for sure! It's very rare for me not to guess who did it.

The only negative to this story, for me, was the slightly meh writing at times. At some moments it was quite obvious this was his debut novel, as the writing felt a little simple or awkward in various instances. However, since I also read his novella (which was published after this one) I know his writing will improve, so I won't let that affect me too much.

So, yeah, will definitely read the next book, hopefully soon!

It was good but not great...

It was easy to read and I didn't manage to work out who the killer was, but it wasn't one I would have stayed up all night to read.

Will definitely try another by this author as this one was my first. And if you're a crime/thriller reader, then I would say it's worth a go.

A gruesome, clever crime thriller. I liked both the detectives and got really invested in finding the killer. I definitely want to continue with this series.
