Holy crap...
I read this book in only a few hours but woah! I'm actually speechless. Loved it and I can't wait for the next one!

Though I did like the main characters inner conflict, I wish the zombies could have been introduced sooner
Spoiler
also I felt the whole B's a girl twist was kind of obvious. I kept wondering if something was being hidden because they never directly called B a boy, or girl.flankaykay's review against another edition

I didn't know what to think when I picked this book up. Sure I've watched multiple movies on zombies, but I've never read a book about them. This one has a unique view of the zombie world and the characters in this book are unique. I didn't enjoy the racism in this book whatsoever and I've never read a book with so much of it inside. This book is about B and how "he" is brought up with an awful and racist father who hits "his" mother. All B does is stand aside and allow "his" father to bully "him" and hurt "his" mother. The zombies ended up coming into the school and attack all the students and teachers there. The attack at the school was planned and there are strange people controlling the zombies. The author tells us that B turns out to be Becky and is a female. This surprised me and the end of the book isn't what I expected with Becky just leaving her father to safety and instead of heading right back towards the school. I'm wondering how the next books will go and I plan on finishing this series.

Living in a multiracial country,I've never been the type to define people by colour rather than religion, gender etc so it was fascinating to see the world through this type of lens:
'They infest good schools and ruin them. They buy houses and destroy neighbourhood......every last terrorist and job stealing scab was like that boy.' (Note:he was black.)
Whew. We have a lot of that at first then, what started out as an ordinary day would end w blood and screams and pain and terror.
Woot woot!
Not to mention that tiny plot twist. I'm not sure how it serves the story. Anyone willing to explain?boobs. I'm kidding. I don't want to spoil it if you haven't read the book......if you have, however. . .
GOTCHA!!!! KNEW YOU'D TRY TO READ THE SPOILER. STOP READING IT IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK.
Okay,for reals now.
why did mr shan made us believe B was a boy?/confuse us about B's gender?
All in all,I give mr shan 5 happy faces. Happy bloody faces. How have I never read any of his work before

I do all of my reviews in the form of questions
What made me pick this book up:
I love zombies and I've read Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan and I really enjoyed it.
What did I like about the cover:
It looks like a creepy zombie book.
What made me read this book:
Exactly what I said, it looked like a creepy zombie book.
What did I like the most:
I liked the narrator. The accent was great. And there was a part near the end that came as a bit of a surprise. If you don't care about spoilers read below to see what the big surprise was.
B is a girl. I should have figured that out because of the narrator but I kind of assumed that it was a really young kid or something. So that was kind of cool finding out B is a girl.
And that's it. That is literally the only good thing about this book.
What didn't I like:
First of all, just a heads up, that description? Does not tell you anything about what the book is about.
I went into this thinking it was going to be a fast paced and terrifying book about the zombie apocalypse.
I have never been more wrong in my life. EVER.
Zom-B is a book about a teenager named B somewhere in Britain. It's about how much B's life sucks, and how their family sucks, and life sucks.
B's dad is a super asshole racist who is also abusive.
B is in turn a racist too, just to impress their dad and make them proud.
The only part about zombies is the prologue, then first chapter, and the last three or so chapters.
The rest of the book is literally about how racist this person is.
B is a terrible person. Going as far as making gorilla noises at a black girl. Absolutely terrible.
This book is so slow and boring, the pacing is terrible, the writing is terrible, and the characters are terrible.
I might be a bit harsh, but this book is awful, not about zombies at all, and has so many gross racists slurs. It's just bad.
If this book wasn't so short I would have never finished it.
Would I read the rest of the series/more from this author?
Of this series? Never. Different Shan books? yes
Barely qualifies as a zombie book.

I usually love Darren Shan's books. They are like candy, not the best for you, but certainly a good time. This book left me puzzled....what is all the racist stuff for? I guess it wouldn't be so questionable if it were just the abusive father, but mixing the main character up in it was too much for me. I think I might have to read the next book in the series just to see if there is some reason for the hate that becomes apparent later in the story. Just has me shaking my head with a rather bad taste in my mouth.

Shocking! Hated it because B is such a racist and a jerky bully but then....Must read the next one.
