a quiet, mildly eerie ghost story that portrays ptsd & acquired physical disability wonderfully. i’m left wanting more, but it is a good introspective novella that illustrates how the aftermath of war, grief, & everything that comes along with them can make one feel disconnected from the world, much like a ghost.

I was having a little trouble with my pre-existing book categories, but I thought about it, and The Apple-Tree Throne is a ghost story, pure and simple. It's set in an alternate-history post-WWI-ish England, and it is interested in the feeling of being haunted and haunting. The way that PTSD can make a person feel like a ghost- the work of having to exist in society in some sort of shape or form when the function you've been asked to do has been taken from you - and also a quite literal ghost. Sparse and interesting and sometimes rather funny; a good rainy day novella.

I very recently listened to the audio version in January, but felt compelled to do a quick re-read when I saw that my library finally obtained ebook copies of this and other backlist titles from the author.

Contemplative, nostalgic, vivid.  Bite-sized tension within stereoscopic conflict of war.  Also unfriendly/friendly ghosts.
