Unlike “The Empress of Salt and Fortune”, which was a tale of war and vengeance, of bloodshed and sacrifice, this standalone sequel was a love story in its entirety. Though, of course, blood and gore and vengeful spirits still made their presence accordingly. And if “The Empress of Salt and Fortune” was inspired by Imperial China, “When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain” was undoubtedly, unequivocally Vietnamese. Thus, everything said and written about the prequel can be said here, only tenfold the affection.

What a love story this one was, the uncanny pairing of a tiger and a scholar, the rawness of nature and the frivolousness of humanity, all observed and told through the lenses of both nature and humans’ respective, if slightly involuntary, delegates. With all the listless violence scattered in its wake, the affair itself was as astonishingly genuine as it was unbearably lovely. And, further into the story, once we had become a bit more familiar with both humans and tigers, oftentimes even humorous in its veracity.

Didn’t measure up to the first book, but still an enjoyable story.

I think I would like these better if Chih was allowed to have some sort of arc but I suppose the author is committed to the concept of the books being readable in any order

Another beautiful tale of love,  storytelling,  and an exploration on how stories change depending on who tells it.

Truly I love the narrative framing of this novella. Listening to one side of a story only for the tigers to interrupt and tell their own version is such a fun device. I love insane lesbians. I love literal predatory lesbians. The tigers are so fun as characters and I would listen to them tell stories for the next forever.
