Loved this novel that provides a look into Sami lives and culture, an indigenous people with a traditional and ongoing life centered on reindeer herding in northern Sweden, Norway, Finland. Like so many indigenous populations, the characters in Stolen face racism, threats, resentment from others over their traditional land rights, hatred of them directed towards the reindeer that sustain them. The novel beautifully describes the northern landscape, way of life and the reindeer. Main character Elsa grows up in a reindeer herding family dealing with decades of reindeer poaching and threats from local men. As Elsa grows up, she and her family fight back.

Hmm. This one was a slow mystery and not a ton happens. Still, it is a rich narrative with a lot of intersecting stories of Sami life. The tension at the center was clearly a metaphor for larger issues and gave an emotional context to cultural erasure. The narration was beautiful too.
