Fun. Stressful. Very different from the others in the series. I don’t even know what’s going on anymore. I just want the Quagmire triplets to be ok.

(2011 rating, 2022 review)

If after all the misfortunes, all the treachery, all the backstabbing and disappointment and life endangering situations, the misery and fear and everyone around me being either a villain or utterly incompetent to help me (or dead), after all this, if someone who is supposed to be on my side and is supposed to give me answer about a conflict within a secret society my parents belonged to and whose secrets have been one of the reasons I’d been in one unfortunate event after another, if that person then told me I had to dress up—me, a child—and spy on others and told me I had to be careful because there was a pair of identical twins lurking about, one of them a villain and of them not a villain, and that the hotel I was to spy within was full of enemies, but when asked about being able to know about the plan, about the secrets, even about who is a villain and who isn’t, if that person then told me that I would just have to fucking guess and follow my gut and gave me no more clues or tips or help or comfort and then fucked off to do something else, I would simply yell at them to go fuck themselves and walk away and let them all destroy each other. What a bunch of unhelpful assholes.

That that very moment wasn’t the villain origin story of the Beaudelaires is the most incredible thing in this whole series and book 13 should be about them murdering Olaf on that boat and then sailing away to start a life of piracy.
