I highly recommend listening to the music referenced in this book as you read. I made a playlist on Spotify with all the music and artists mentioned. It’s titled the same as the novel.

A big thank you to @bookeleefoster and @gallerybooks #partner for this advanced reader’s copy💖.
✨What it is about:
Two estranged friends unexpectedly reconnect in the Hamptons and are forced to finally confront the terrible event that drove them apart ten years earlier. ✨
💭My thoughts:
This unlikely pair form a friendship that from the start seemed unilateral to me. Margo seemed manipulative, and Thea was just Margo’s shiny toy for the summer. Though I did not love the characters, I did find the story interesting and entertaining. I found the event that tore them apart slightly predictable, but I liked some of the growth Thea was finally able to achieve through her struggles and what she faced in the end of it all. I also really enjoyed all the music talk and references included in the story. Though from the cover I thought this to be a light easy beach read, this proved to be more of a serious dive into women and their relationships with each other, and with those around them. It’s incredible how easily we can sometimes loose ourselves.

As a starter, this was not my style of writing. The period references were too much on the nose for me, and just too many.
I did like the mystery and Thea’s character development and the friendship, even if I didn’t like the characters themselves and I also didn’t care much for them.
The feminist narrative didn’t really feel authentic and too much of a projection on the characters. Even though the reference to Gloria Steinem gave it some weight, I didnt believe it and still cheered it on.

Margot disappeared from Thea’s life after a traumatic event during the summer that the two were inseparable. Now it’s ten years later and Thea is struggling living her life as just a mom and housewife when Margot shows up at her door needing her help. Will Thea agree? Can she look past the way Margot left her in the past?
I did this one on audio and just loved taking the story in that way! I wanted to know what happened within the friendship from the very start, and could not stop listening to find out what was going to happen, as well as what had happened years before! This friendship for sure had a bit of a toxicity to it, which I hate in real life, but love in a good book! I really enjoyed following along as Margot helped Thea see that she could have more than her current situation, and watching Thea try to find the ways to make that happen. I found this book to be so enjoyable!
Thank you to @Gallerybooks and @simon.audio for my gifted copy of this book!
