It is disappointing that after the masterful story of The Blue Lotus, Hergé followed it up with a story that, while entertaining, pales in comparison to what came before it. I think the problem with it is that the humor is a little overbearing and doesn’t gel well with the interesting heist story that is central to this volume. It’s a little too funny when it should be taking itself more seriously, but there are standout moments that make this a good book (such as Tintin’s car barely being hit by a train careening down the tracks).

Most notably, this is the first Tintin story to create a fictional nation, something that would recur with much greater frequency and, frankly, success as the stories went on. Although the portrayal of the Arumbaya is cliched by today’s standards, it is not racist the way Hergé portrayed other tribal nations and a very positive rendering of other cultures, something that would continue to get better as the years went on.

Ultimately, this is an okay Tintin story, but not one that stands out amongst a lot of the better ones.
