‘The Whispers’ are those small moments when something isn’t quite right, and the point of this story is that we should listen to these moments… these whispers. Intuition perhaps?

I’m giving this book 3.75 because I think it was well executed and I was curious about how the story unfolded - but I don’t actually think I’d recommend this to anyone as it was pretty triggering and the story itself didn’t make this worth experiencing? If that makes sense? It felt icky. Basically anything bad that can happen to you as a woman happens in this book - you have graphic miscarriages, infidelity, jealousy, lust, unhealthy friendships, women who hate their children, women who hate their husbands, abused children, bullying, and more… it was like watching a train wreck - I needed to know what happened but I didn’t necessarily enjoy it. There is no happiness in this book.

Listened on audiobook and was good in this format.

Read this if you want a little "trashy TV"/drama in novel form. Who's sleeping with who? Is she a murderer?! Will the relationships survive? Suburban drama to the max!

3.5 stars, rounded up

This is one of those "every marriage is awful in it's own way" kind of books. (Cannot relate.) I've labeled it as a mystery-thriller, but it's really more of a domestic drama with a little dash of whodunit to keep things interesting. I also read The Push by Ashley Audrain, and The Whispers feels like its spiritual successor. Audrain gives her characters such depth and nuance, even if they're "bad" people.

Just like The Push, this one also ends with a big "OMG" last sentence. I find this kind of ending lazy, but it's fun!

Extreme trigger warnings for fertility issues, pregnancy loss, etc.
