three-quarters of the book is translated from French lectures, which are a bit dense, but the ideas about how culture exists in society are excellent, especially for anyone who works in a service oriented field.

I only read the first part, but considering how dense this is, I will count that as "reading" this book.

It changed the way I thought about literature, art, academia, forever. As well as how Flaubert's L'éducation sentimentale develops as a novel. Certainly the field of contemporary cultural production has changed so much as to make this book outdated. Yet maybe it's a landmark as to how things were before the digital media cultural production (and consumption) revolution. I recommend it for the hopelessly highbrow graduate student.
