It was not that frightening, as I expected it to be, being a Bram Stoker short story. It gave me chills time to time, so I would’ve initially given it three stars, but the ending was really unexpected, which made up for the four stars.

4 stars. A ghost story with a horrific ending.
The rats were reminiscent of Dracula and his ability to possess animals and I liked that it was implied that the same was happening with the descriptions of the similarities between the rat and the judge.

There at the end of the rope of the great alarm bell hung the body of the student, and on the face of the Judge in the picture was a malignant smile.

A fun and effective little story about a man who wants to get away to revise and finds himself in the house of an infamous hanging judge. There are stories about bogeymen in the house but he’s studying maths, he’s not a man for the supernatural. As the lady hired to clean for him says;
“Bogies is rats, and rats is bogies!”

True enough, the house is full of rats but he likes them except for the large one with the knowing eyes that sits on his chair, even the other rats go quiet when he’s around….

Like all good horror, it’s a little silly and could topple into it at any moment but manages to walk the tightrope of tension. Rarely for a horror short story, I’d like a little more information, build up the legend behind the house, something like that but the story has a better punch for being short.
I'll remember it and any rate.

First review : 3 stars

Well, it wasn't that frightening being a Bram Stoker story, not even a single chill, but the end wasn't what I expected, which made it for the three stars!

Second review: 4 stars

I still don't find it that creepy but I guess it's just because I am safe in my house with my family.
When you put yourself in the student's shoes, I think that the situation changes dramatically! 🤤👻
