This was super creepy! I am happy to have enjoyed this one as I wasn't a super fan of Dracula. Who knew?

I expected more of Bram Stoker. While the writing is creepy and well-done, the story itself isn’t as scary and horrifying as I thought it would be. It really played into my fear of rats, though, and that made this an interesting read.

Not as gripping as I would have liked it to be, the writing style is unfortunately a let down. Not Stoker's best.

Although this is quite a short story it is as full of gripping tension, foreboding and anticipation as you would expect from Stoker. It follows a young student who rents an old empty house in a small English village for peace and quite so he can study. Unfortunately that's not quite what he gets as the house is invested with rats...and something/someone else. This story will certainly make you think the next time your looking at the photographs of people past if you go a-wandering through the rooms of historic houses, especially those that have ropes hanging beside their fireplaces.

An abandoned mansion. An intrepid young protagonist. A giant rat, and a hangman’s noose. This story has the perfect foundations to send fear into its readers - so I’m surprised upon reflection that I struggled to enjoy it. There are lovely sections of writing, particularly involving the aforementioned rat and his baleful glare, but it lacked the horror or suspense that I found so powerful in Stoker’s ‘Dracula’. A decent story but by no means his finest piece of short story writing.
