Not much "derring-do" as said in the book preview, but still a nice classic. A good read.

I wish I could have experienced this novel in its original serial format, getting a piece of it with the delivery of the newspaper every week. Reading it all as one lump of a story doesn't do it justice. I didn't enjoy it. :( Plus the title is so misleading. The iron mask part is just a little detail in the story. :(

I've heard rumors that bad translations and bowdlerizations really hurt this work, and that it's really a classic.
It read to me like an eighteenth-century version of the Saturday morning Western. The characters are paper-thin, and every motive and emotion is explained - that is, told rather than shown.
What saves this from being one-star is that it is a rip-roaring, swash-buckling adventure with lots of carnage.

I liked some of the action and the plot against the king, but I didn't care for characters, how the female characters are treated, or small the plot about the actual man in the iron mask is and how it ended.

Not as good as The Three Musketeers, but definitely the second best in the series.
I just can't stand the Raoul and Athos storyline. Other than that, it was a very fitting end to the series and made me very sad that there are no more to read.

Surprisingly enjoyed this more than I thought I would! Really enjoyed Dumas’ writing.
