Some good stories in this anthology, including [a:F. Marion Crawford|6478378|F. Marion Crawford|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1377815721p2/6478378.jpg]'s "The Upper Berth" and the original version (the editor says) of "Lost Hearts", [a:M R James]' second story. Most of the other stories are not that scary and have very little ghostly atmosphere or ghostly appearances in them.
The later stories are written in more modern style, but it was easier to write a ghost story later in the Victorian era as the public became more interested in spiritualism and it took less evidence to make them believe in ghosts. (For a better essay on this, see [b:The Victorian Book of The Dead|23551484|The Victorian Book of The Dead|Chris Woodyard|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png|43506709] by [a:Chris Woodyard|282611|Chris Woodyard|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png].)
This phenomenon reaches it's apotheosis in the [a:Henry James|159|Henry James|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1468309415p2/159.jpg] story "The Importance of Old Clothes", in which the ghost makes its presence felt in the last sentence. How it does it I shall leave as a surprise for the reader.
