Wellll… friends, Romans, countrymen ..a play about men, murder, revenge, dirty dealings, silly squabbles, false promises, war and politics all wrapped up in supposed honour ( the word honour and honourable runs throughout the play, it is on almost every page it seems.. but it is all smoke and mirrors). Wives get a raw deal in this play too.
The only sensible line comes from a slave who is freed after he is made to assist his masters suicide.. and he says:
‘far from this country Pindarus shall run, where never Roman shall take note of him’.
very wise.. they were a lot of trouble those Romans! (Tho they did make lovely mosaic floors).
I saw this play at the globe a year or so ago and it wasn’t a good production. But I did really enjoy reading the play this week, easy to read and very relevant to the world today sadly. How easy we humans are swayed by a good speech

A solid story that provided the archetypes with how we identify these roman figures to this day. There are some nice meditations throughout the text and of course general beautiful usage of the English language, but it is a very simple play in premise and execution. I do at least appreciate the complexity of Brutus' character, but all the characters were great.
It's Shakespeare, it's great.

Liked it... good historical/dramatic account. Not a lot of female characters (really only 1 of any importance). Some of the greatest quotes, though!

Read this a couple times outside of school and then just last year for English. It's a Shakespearean classic, not my favorite, but it was all right.
