This has been on my list for years. I wish I hadn't waited to read it! Uh, wow.

Paolo Polvodero, a child of indistinct age, lives with his parents in a small house at the very tip of Chile. It's a life of wind and rain on their sparse farm. Then a hardened criminal, Angel Allegria, makes his way there, decides he lives there now, and stabs Paolo's parents to death. He does not wish to harm Paolo, so they live together in an uneasy partnership. Soon, another traveler comes by, Luis, the son of a rich winemaker who is expected to travel the world but does not want to. He has come to this very remote area to hide and hope that his friends and family will assume he is living up to the family tradition.

Soon, the three of them are living together as an unusual family unit. Raising Paolo is giving Angel a purpose that he's never had before. But he starts to worry that Paolo likes Luis more. When their party is forced to make its way to a town to purchase livestock, they all encounter dilemmas that they never thought about living on the farm.

This was deceptively simple. It read like a fable, but an oddly intense and emotionally exhausting fable. It only took a couple of days to read, but I think it's going to stick with me for a long time.

Malgré un début difficile et trop rapide sous certains aspects, la suite et fin du roman arrive à nous émouvoir et à rattraper le tir.

رواية فريدة من نوعها، حرّكت مشاعر غامضة في قرار نفسي، رواية عظيمة لولا النقص في فهم شخصية باولو حيال حدث وقع له في بداية الرواية، ولكنها على أية حال جميلة شاعرية مفعمة بالسخرية من واقع نعشيه مليء بالتناقضات والاضطرابات التي تجعل للقاتل دموعًا حقيقية أكثر من دموع المظلوم.

« Je ne suis qu'un assassin, souffla-t-il, mais il y a une chose que je sais... Quand on est triste, et qu'on a la chance d’avoir une épaule pour pleurer dessus il ne faut pas hésiter.
Il resserra son étreinte.
- pleure, ajouta-t-il »

Je me suis embarqué dans cette lecture sans avoir lu le résumé. Je ne savais pas à quoi m'attendre et pour être honnête je ne m'attendais à rien. Mais j'ai été très surpris. Pour moi ce roman évoque ce passage de l'enfance innocente à la vie. Le moment de notre enfance où on comprend que nous ne sommes pas seuls. Le livre parle aussi du pardon, des regrets, de l'empathie, de la trahison mais surtout, il parle de l'amour. L'amour pur qui peut changer les gens, l'amour innocent qui donne envie de tout sacrifier pour apporter la paix. L'amour qui nous fait devenir meilleur. Je ne sais pas si la manière dont j'ai compris et ressenti cette histoire est la bonne mais j'ai aimé les émotions et les réflexions qui ont émané de ma lecture.

‏"أتذكر؟ لقد سألتك أن تتذكر يوم مولدك عندما كنا نعيش في منزلك، لقد أجبتني بأن ذلك كان يوم وصولي.. وأنا كذلك! أنا كذلك وُلدت ذلك اليوم، فمنذ وقعت عليك عيناي أبصرت النور."

Easily one of the most memorable stories I've have ever read to my kids. Evil at times yet poetically constructed this was a rare find.

منذ فترة طويلة وجدت أنها تقارب السنة لم أقرأ رواية واحدة أصل معها لدرجة من الارتباط العاطفي الوثيق ما يجعلني أتعلق بها حقًا وأحزن حين أنتهي من آخر صفحة فيها وتجعلني أقع في الحب. ثم جاءت دموع القاتل لتنهي هذا العام السيء. عمل يأسرك منذ الغلاف قبل حتى أن تقرأ أول صفحة.
هناك شيء ما يربطني عاطفيًا بالروايات التي يكون أبطالها أطفالًا أو حتى يكون طفلًا هو أحد أبطالها، شيء نقي ورقيق ولطيف ووديع، شيء يليق بالطفولة يجعل قلبي ممتلئًا بالحب تجاه الرواية وشخصياتها طوال قراءتي لها.
الرواية تحكي عن باولو، الفتى الذي فقد كل شيء يعرفه في ثاني صفحة في الرواية. الرواية تحكي عن آنخل، القاتل الذي وجد معنى لحياته وولد من جديد على يد باولو. الرواية تحكي عن لويس، الغريب ذو فجوة في قلبه لا يملؤها أحد ولا حتى باولو.
أحببت كل شيء في هذه الرواية، الشخصيات واللغة والأماكن والحبكة والنهاية.
إلى باولو، الطفل الذي كبر فجأة والرجل الذي لم يفقد نقاءه أبدًا.
