I happen to be addicted to the "Dr. Siri" series, but the ending of the book was not believable and therefore, a disappointment.
Dr. Siri is such an interesting character. The plot was interesting and it also took place in Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge are ruthless. Siri learns about the killing fields

This is the darkest Dr Siri yet!
The only reason I'm giving this one three stars is because it's so dark, and because people (other than me) are probably not so super interested in Lao culture.
The mystery in the book is intriguing, as are the characters. The writing doesn't blow me away, but I didn't really expect it to. I was interested in the plot, and the window into Laos and in particular Vientiane. This book delivered both.
What I didn't expect was a bit of a history lesson on the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, and it darkened the book in a way that was sobering, but that didn't make it enjoyable to read about.
Recommended for fans of the Siri Paiboun series, those interested in 1970's Asia, and fans of crime fiction set in exotic international locations. Be prepared for a bit of a dark journey, but a worthwhile one.

The latest in another series I enjoy--Dr. Siri, the only coroner in 1978 Laos wrestles with the triple murders of Easter-Bloc trained Lao and runs afoul of the Khmer Rouge on a diplomatic trip to Phnom Penh
I struggled with this one because of the flashback/forward of Dr. Siri being tortured by the Khmer Rouge in every other chapter. It was hard to read those parts, although important to historical accuracy. Aside from that, the personal touches of emotion were wonderful to read. I love this series.
I loved it! I've returned to the series after months of wandering into other books and it's like renewing ties with very dear friends of mine. Dr. Siri Paiboun and his entourage will always be my heroes.
I love this series of books and number 7did not disappoint. Siri is as amusing and disrespectful as ever-a wonderful character. In this book the case Siri becomes involved with is secondary to his journey into Cambodia and its consequences. Be prepared for some dark, dark moments. Hopefully it will encourage readers to delve further into what went on in Cambodia during this time-disturbing stuff. Look forward to reading the next one.
