This book appeared as a recommendation on my Amazon page in November, and I decided to give it a try because it was on sale...I'm really glad I did! By the end of chapter 1 I was hooked and glad that I had gotten the next two books as well. The attention to detail and research that obviously goes into every book makes the fast-paced developments of each story richer, and makes you one more member of the team. While Daniel does a good job at explaining what has happened in previous book, and it's not completely necessary to go back to book 1 to follow the life and times of Gabriel Allon, I will definitely go back to the beginning. I know it will be worth my time

3.5 not my favorite in the series, felt almost too similar to the one before, which probably means I need a small break before resuming the series. Allon and his crew take on a new terror network that has carried out bombings across Europe.
So, it turns out that I love Dan Silva. Portrait of a Spy is a strong novel winding its way through the art world, the terrorist world and the complicated world of spies. This spy was not a lone ranger, but a part of a pack of spies. Wonderful! I found the current day setting very refreshing and engaging.

The writer enjoyed creating an Israeli "James Bond" who drives Audis- restores famous paintings and promises investements of 20 million dollars without blinking. I enjoyed reading the book- it had a good pace and was interesting- however there were a few stereotypes such as the "Abdul and Abdul" bank that left me wincing. Fun for a light read- but not great literature.

My first by Silva and I will be back. Gabriel Allon is a wonderful character and I am not ready to give him up. Part time art restorer, part time spy, Gabriel weaves his way through both worlds. The Middle Eastern geo-political situation is the backdrop to terrorist bombings that Allon has to stop/thwart. The plot kept up a good pace, keeping me keen to read on.
HHHHHHHHHHH this book was literally written as a vehicle for Daniel Silva to bitch about Obama for nearly 400 pages. Tired tired tired. I have one more book in this series left on my iPad & we'll see then if this series is even salvageable.
A good read, but I thought this was somewhat of a let down as compared to the previous works.
The storyline is interesting in that an old character is brought back but then I just felt more could have been done on developing the storyline. It felt like somewhat a stretch in terms of what happened.
Nevertheless, a good read.
