The last book of the series was great. I love how both cities worked together to live in harmony. Awesome.
I wasn't sure if there was really anymore story to the book of embers but I really enjoyed this one. Lian & Doon go an another adventure and make a pretty remarkable discover (yes, sounds familiar). This one really seems to wrap up the series with glimpse at what is to come.

It's a great conclusion to the series. I really enjoyed it—it wraps up the story well and gives a satisfying ending. A solid read!
Sometimes I hate reading series books, because usually my expectations are way too high after a good first book. This happened to me with His Dark Materials. The first books in Ember and HDM knocked me out, but they ended on such disappointing notes.
One thing that kind of annoyed me about the Ember series is how Duprau continually introduces some kind of helpful device that immediately gets destroyed. I wanted to know what was in that book, but no! Guess what! Not this time! Arrrgh!
This book just ran out of steam for me around the middle. The ending was 'surprise' was cool, though. I wasn't expecting that (which makes me question how well I paid attention while reading; did anyone else see it coming?).
Not horrible, just ok.

Open-ended yet satisfying ending to the Ember series. With the exception of the very end, Darkhold lacks the heavy-handed preachiness that detracted from the other three volumes.
Great, thought-provoking series for older elementary aged kids.
