The plot seems to carry itself around the idea of the world ending and it's tragedies. There isn't a linear plot and that's not a bad thing necessarily but it can make certain parts of the book a slog to get through. Although you see the characters evolve the point of view of the story can be limited - many times it's an observation of how people react rather than insights on how they or the protagonist feel. When I was invested it was really good, when I wasn't I was waiting for the next major plot point.

I really thought this book would be as good as Frankenstein. I was wrong.

Reading this was like digging in a coal mine and occasionally finding diamonds.

This book is bonkers and drags significantly in parts and/but I loved parts of it enough to merit four stars.

The first 2/3s was so slow for me and it was hard to be along for the ride when it didn't feel like anything was building (a common problem I have with classics). When the pandemic hit, that's the sort of writing I was waiting for from Shelley, and it was especially moving considering the time in her life she wrote the book and how much of her own grief and processing she must have put into this.

I am fast learning that I just really don't have the patience for a lot of classic literature. I like a lot Shelley's ideas (as I did with Frankenstein), but I just struggle with the actual story in the midst of all of it. It's super dull and soapy and filled with a lot of the same stuff I've always struggled with in writers of that era.
