Loved it. Chaotic, entertaining, tender. Would recommend to my best friend Tony but, sadly, he can’t read

I finished the book as I was dying to know the end, it would have to start lighting up a spark somewhere.
The pill popping bored me, but I happy I pulled through. I am sitting here chewing on what the take away from the book is, and now I actually appreciate the book a whole lot more.

Started reading in October 2019 apparently (thx Goodreads for keeping track), failed twice around page 50. This time, I finished it but whyyy is it so hard to get throuuugh.

The language is quick, witty, dry, I liked that a lot. But the characters and their actions felt flat to me. Either people ruin their life (our protagonist) or they are caricatures (Reva, the artist Xi Ping). I didn't like them and if everyone had just died, that would've been fine by me. But then again, maybe that's exactly what Mosfegh wanted me to feel.

Call me Whoopi.

Comparable to Eileen by the same author - A look into the mind of a Weird Girl(tm), but less malicious and creepy and more off duty model. Less female manipulator, more female pill popper addicted to the blur of sleep as a coping mechanism; a break from the real world.

The juxtaposition between the main character and her friend, Reva, was what made the novel particularly compelling for me. Reva is her counterpart, living unapologetically and urging our mc to join her - It is clear from the beginning that the mc's disdain for her comes from her deep discomfort with embracing life and her pathological avoidance of anything uncomfortable.

Mc's life is simple - Abusing prescription pills, heavily sleeping, bad bodega coffee, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Until it isn't anymore; in the end, her year of rest and relaxation does instill in her a new appreciation for life, though the experiment was not without its losses. In New York, 2001, loss is bound to come.

Ended up upping my rating from 3.25 to 3.75 after some reflection. It has DEFINITELY stuck with me and is so close to being a 4.0, but not quite there.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it. The ability to write a character completely both unrelatable and relatable is admirable. I'll think of this story every September now.
