I like to read children’s books because they always teach me something new. Helix Gets His Wheels did not disappoint. As the years have progressed, children’s books have grown to become more inclusive of people of different colors and disabilities. Helix gives a unique look into the life of someone who wheels around everywhere. Helix goes to have a sleepover with his friend only to realize that he can’t stay at his friend’s house because the only way to enter the house is via stairs. Helix’s mom is a true advocate for her child to participate in a normal childhood, thinks quick on her feet, and instantly invites Helix’s friend over to their house for the sleepover instead. The authors give us a unique look into the life of someone with a disability. I have both friends and family members who are wheelchair bound, and I love seeing them included in books!
